And we’re off …
🧑💻 Marketing word of the week: “Adstock”
Adstock is the lingering effect of advertising on consumer behavior after the ad exposure has occurred. It’s essentially about how marketing influence can accumulate through repeated exposure and then gradually diminish over time, as opposed to disappearing right after a campaign ends.

While we don’t do advertising as SEO/GEOs, we do focus on brand visibility. Thus adstock gives us a unique lens through which to view the relationship between brand visibility and search behavior.
Influence can accumulate in this zero-click world, and that means repeated presence in AI Overviews or mentions in ChatGPT can contribute to brand awareness that leads to consumer actions down the road, like branded searches, direct traffic, or conversions.
🤖 AI word of the week: “Anisotropy”
In machine learning, anisotropy (pronounced: an-eye-SOT-ruh-pee) describes a situation where vector representations, such as word or text embeddings, are unevenly distributed across a multidimensional space, often concentrating in certain directions rather than spreading out uniformly.

In practical terms, when embeddings are highly anisotropic, many of the points cluster along similar directions, which can potentially make unrelated sentences appear more similar than they actually are.
SEO/GEO professionals should care about anisotropy because embedding-based retrieval systems use mathematical representations of text to find relevant information, and anisotropy can affect how effectively these systems distinguish between different meanings. In other words, semantic similarity isn’t necessarily the same as relevance. Just because two pieces of content are mathematically similar doesn’t mean they satisfy the same user intent.
✌️Introduction to week 148: “And the winner is …”
I had the privilege of attending the US Search Awards dinner this week in NYC as a judge, which afforded me the opportunity to get on stage and give out some awards.

Aside from the winning card getting semi-stuck in the envelope on my first attempt, I found the experience highly exciting and rewarding.
Perhaps the best part of the event was a lifetime achievement award given to Bruce Clay.
All in all, it’s a great opportunity to give back to the search community, and I look forward to contributing to more awards events in the future.
Thank you for supporting Hamsterdam and the cause of SEO/GEO learning. 🙏
Enjoy the vibes:
