The evolutions of search today.
As an SEO strategist and consultant, I’ve had a pretty successful career.
I even coined terms like “11x content,” “post-HCU (helpful content update) world,” and likely also “people-first SEO,” but none of that’s important right now. 😉
What matters are your business goals and how to fulfill them with SEO.
Search engines like Google and Bing are using sophisticated combinations of algorithms involving knowledge graphs, machine learning, semantic search, and deep neural networks.
They’re also experimenting with new formats of SERPs (search result pages), often influenced by generative-AI, like AI Overviews or AI-organized result pages, making accurate rank tracking a distant memory.
On top of that, we have new AI answer engines like Perplexity, as well as chatbots like ChatGPT (and SearchGPT), Meta AI, or Gemini, which upend the traditional search experience.
Here’s an example search journey I just took, examining how influential AI is in the process.
The future is RAG, or retrieval augmented generation, and knowledge graphs.
This is where your structured or unstructured content gets fed into an AI model, turned into vector embeddings, and spit out the other side in an LLM’s grounded response.
You likely won’t see too many clicks to your website or social profiles from those mentions or citations.
However, you could still leverage that visibility to grow your brand’s presence with a targeted user base, telling your story and earning “qualified clicks” to support conversions.
To do that, you need a holistic SEO, content, and social media/video strategy that accounts for structured and unstructured data, knowledge graph presences, and the reality of how machine learning models process content.
