Hamsterdam Part 114 Weekly SEO News Summary

Opening notes, thoughts, and musings:

  • I appreciate you being here, and look forward to sharing the week’s news! 🙌
  • Spam update is still rolling out. Hopefully, you’ve stayed safe. 😉

And we’re off …

🧑‍💻 Marketing word of the week: “Share of voice”

Share of voice (SOV) measures how much of the conversation (or visibility) in a given market a brand captures compared to its competitors.

Share of voice example pie chart.
Source.

SOV started in advertising but has since expanded to PR, social, and SEO. In SEO, SOV is the percentage of keyword rankings, impressions, or clicks your brand owns relative to its competitors.

SOV has become harder to measure for SEOs in the era of AI chatbots, be it AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Copilot, because visibility isn’t just clicks but also citations. To expand SOV in this new landscape, focus on brand presence across the web, including authoritative mentions, consistent branding, topical authority, and social mentions.

🤖 AI word of the week: “Supervised learning”

Supervised learning is a type of machine learning where the algorithm is trained on labeled data (inputs paired with correct outputs). The goal is to learn a function that maps inputs to outputs so the model can predict outcomes for new or unseen inputs.

Supervised learning example.
Source.

For example, we might feed an algorithm thousands of photos labeled “cat” or “dog” and the model will learn patterns to predict whether new images contain either animal.

Two types of supervised learning are classification (prediction of categories), such as predicting whether a blog post is likely to rank for a given keyword, and regression (prediction of continuous values), such as predicting the amount of traffic a page might generate.

😊 Introduction to week 114: “Regex in GSC”

This is a simple tip many may already know, but using regex in Google Search Console can be an excellent way to look at performance for a set of pages or queries.

For example, we recently updated a group of pages for a website and I wanted to know specifically how that group was performing.

By using the regex filter for pages in GSC, I was able to isolate performance for the set of pages.

If you haven’t tried using regex in GSC before, I highly recommend it for a variety of use cases. Here’s a guide to help get you started.

Thank you for supporting Hamsterdam and the cause of SEO & AI learning. 🙏

Enjoy the vibes:

✍️ Content marketing

From what is helpful content to user journeys and beyond.

Most brand blogs are a waste of time. Not because content doesn’t work – but because you’re doing it wrong. Keyword sausage machines, “Admin” bylines, cautious filler… It’s industrialised mediocrity, and it serves no purpose.www.jonoalderson.com/conjecture/s…
