And we’re off …

🧑‍💻 Marketing word of the week: “Generational marketing”

Generational marketing is the practice of tailoring messaging, channels, tone, and offers to groups of people shaped by the same time period and cultural events (think Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, etc.).

From an SEO perspective, this matters because search is behavior, and behavior is generational (to some degree).

Gen Z might prefer skimmable content that’s visual and provides quick validation, whereas older generations might prefer depth, clarity, and credibility.

Generational tendencies may also influence where users find their content, such as TikTok for younger users or Facebook for older ones.

It’s also important to avoid generalizations, so you’ll want to inform your strategies with real user feedback and data.

🤖 AI word of the week: “Generative AI”

Generative AI refers to models that learn patterns from large datasets and then produce new content that looks statistically similar to what they learned. It may involve writing text, summarizing or synthesizing answers, generating images or code, or translating content.

Remember, generative AI doesn’t know facts, but rather it predicts likely outputs based on context.

SEOs should care about generative AI because search is shifting from “find the best page” to “generate the best answer.” Search engines now summarize multiple sources and answer queries directly in the SERPs. Importantly, they decide which content is worth synthesizing in the first place.

Generative AI pulls from semantic understanding, not (just) exact matches. That means topic clusters matter over single keywords, natural language plays a big role, and question-based queries are key.

With the advent of generative AI in search, CTRs are also changing (meaning dropping), and conversions matter even more.

😊 Introduction to week 128: “Arrived in NYC”

Last week it was Albany, this week it’s Manhattan.

My relocation to NYC is going swimmingly so far, albeit a little colder than I was used to in Florida.

Next week, we’re venturing into Brooklyn to look at apartments there.

Oh, and since it’s Christmas time, I haven’t forgotten about sharing a photo of the Rockefeller Center Tree:

More sports features showing up in the SERPs. This time I was seeing a "What's new" feature that provided a Discover-like feed based on the player. Each listing was AIO-like where you could tap the publisher list. Then at the bottom there was a "Discover more" section with additional players.

🧑‍💻 Technical SEO

Everything from basics to advanced moves (and also tools).

To clarify, this is about JavaScript rendering. If you use JS to change the meta robots tag, then understand that Google can skip rendering and not execute JS if it sees a noindex tag in the static html. So if you want a page indexed, then don't use noindex from the start only to change it via JS.
