Hamsterdam Part 94

Opening notes, thoughts, and musings:

  • Welcome to another new week of Hamsterdam! 🐹
  • I appreciate you being here, and look forward to sharing the week’s news! 🙌
  • Happy Easter weekend to those who celebrate! 🐰

If you’re in a rush, hop down to the news portion. 📰

And we’re off …

🧑‍💻 Marketing word of the week: “Consumer behavior”

Consumer behavior is the study of how individuals (or groups or even organizations) make decisions to purchase goods and services. It’s about why they do so.

The study of consumer behavior combines information from psychology, sociology, economics, and anthropology (my college major, which I’ve written about in a marketing context) to explain needs, motivations, perceptions, attitudes, and learning processes.

Consumer behavior models trace the buyer’s journey from problem recognition to post‑purchase evaluation, helping marketers predict the product attributes that will resonate, what information sources customers will trust, and how cultural or social influences (think family, social media, etc.) shape choices.

Understanding consumer behavior can help marketers by guiding segmentation (groups with shared motives), positioning (framing value to match those motives), and the design of the marketing mix, things like product features, pricing cues, messaging tone, and channel placement. (I used ChatGPT o3 to help write this. I hope it’s not too AI-sounding!)

🤖 AI word of the week: “Context window”

A context window is the amount of text an LLM can “see” when it generates language. Every word or symbol is converted to a token, then the model’s self‑attention layers compare each token to all others in that window, forming the statistical relationships that drive predictions.

Anything beyond the context window, whether it’s earlier chats, a long document, or the model’s own previous output has to be dropped, summarized, or otherwise compressed before the model can continue.

Windows range from a few‑hundred tokens in early transformers to millions in cutting‑edge systems. Bigger windows let the model track longer conversations, follow complex codebases, or reference whole research papers, but they also raise computation time and memory requirements quadratically.

😄 Introduction to week 94: “What year is it?”

That’s a phrase I actually searched on Google recently.

When the new year started, I forgot to update Hamsterdam posts to say 2025, so they all said 2024. I NEVER noticed. So last week, I went, “Wait, is that right?”

With so much going on in the world of Search (and AI), it’s easy to feel inundated with information. I guess my brain ran out of space with regard to the current date lol.

But never fear! Hamsterdam recaps now say 2025. You’re in the right place. 😊

Back to the future GIF.

Thank you for supporting Hamsterdam and the cause of SEO & AI learning. 🙏

Enjoy the vibes:

Missed last week? Don’t worry, I got you! Read Part 93 to catch up.

Little tip – There are 'outside <head>' filters for key elements such as titles, canonicals, hreflang etc in their tabs. However, often the cause is an invalid element in the <head>, which closes it early. Check the Validation tab to see if this has been triggered when debugging.
