Extractability for AI Assistants: 11 Tips for SEO/GEO Content Creation

Extractability refers to how easily AI assistants can understand useful passages from your content and use them as part of AI-generated answers.

Another way to think about extractability is as part of a broader content retrieval pipeline, with five steps. Here is the process your content may go through when being used by an AI assistant:

  1. Crawlability: Can the AI assistant access your content?
  2. Indexability: Can the AI assistant store/discover your content?
  3. Understandability: Can the AI assistant interpret your content?
  4. Extractability: Can the AI assistant pull out a useful passage of your content?
  5. Citability: Is the pulled information useful/trustworthy enough to reference?

In this guide, we’ll talk about 11 tips (with examples) for making your content more extractable as part of an SEO/GEO strategy.

1. Write Self-Contained Passages

AI assistants may retrieve and use individual passages from webpages when generating answers.

To give your content the best chance of being selected as a candidate passage for an AI-generated answer, it should be self-contained.

Self-contained passages make sense on their own, even when they’re removed from the context of the page.

The idea behind self-contained passages is semantic completeness.

Here’s an example of a passage that isn’t self-contained:

“It helps improve visibility in search engines, while the newer approach focuses on appearing in AI-generated answers. Both rely on creating useful content and making it easy for systems to understand.”

Now, here’s an example of the same information but in a self-contained passage:

“Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of improving a website’s visibility in traditional search engine results. Generative engine optimization (GEO) focuses on improving a brand or website’s visibility in AI-generated answers from systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Copilot. SEO and GEO overlap because both depend on accessible, useful, well-structured content that search and AI systems can understand.”

2. Put the Answer Before the Explanation

Introduce the important parts of information early within the page and subsequently within each self-contained passage.

Use the inverted pyramid structure for the article itself, where you start with key information and add supporting details later.

Then, within each paragraph, follow a BLUF (bottom line up front) writing style, where the main idea is expressed immediately, followed by additional information.

Also, use question-based headings where it makes sense, so it’s easy to provide an immediate answer to the user’s query.

This makes your core claims easier for humans and machines to locate.

Here’s an example passage not using BLUF:

“AI assistants process information in different ways, and there are several factors that can influence how content is interpreted. Depending on the system, certain parts of a webpage may be more useful than others. This is why extractability can matter for GEO.”

And here’s an example of the BLUF format:

“Extractability matters for GEO because AI assistants often retrieve and reuse individual passages from webpages when generating answers. Making the main point clear at the beginning of a passage helps both users and machines quickly understand what the section is about. Supporting details, examples, and caveats can then follow.”

3. Name Your Entities

Entities are identifiable people, places, or things.

Mentioning related entities in your content helps keep details rich and extractable, as opposed to using vague pronouns.

You can still use pronouns where necessary for readability, but it’s best to default to naming the entity that you’re referring to whenever possible.

Here’s an example with vague pronouns:

“It can crawl webpages and use them to help generate answers for users.”

And here’s an example with named entities:

“OAI-SearchBot can crawl webpages that may appear in ChatGPT search results.”

4. Keep One Main Idea Per Passage

Try to avoid introducing several competing ideas in your content’s passages. Instead, focus on one main idea per passage and describe it completely and clearly.

Here’s an example of a less focused paragraph:

“GEO can improve visibility in AI-generated answers, and structured data can help search engines understand page content. Brands should also earn third-party mentions because AI assistants may rely on external sources, while technical SEO remains important for crawlability.”

And here’s an example of a more focused paragraph:

“Structured data can help search engines understand specific information on a webpage, such as products, organizations, authors, and events. When the markup accurately reflects the visible content, it provides additional machine-readable context about the entities and attributes described on the page.”

5. Use Descriptive Headings

Put full details for each section of content in your headings, as opposed to vague headings that don’t fully hint at the passage(s) within them.

Here’s an example of a vague heading:

“Benefits”

And here’s an example of a descriptive heading:

“Benefits of Self-Contained Passages for AI Extractability”

6. Use Semantic Triples to Make Relationships Explicit

Semantic triples include a subject, a predicate, and an object.

By writing in semantic triples, you make the relationships in your content clearer for users and machines.

Here’s an example of a less explicit sentence:

“External sources get used by it to generate answers.”

And here’s an example using semantic triples:

“ChatGPT Search uses web sources to support AI-generated answers.”

7. Use Lists, Tables, and Structured Formats Where Appropriate

Structured formats can make related information easier for AI assistants to identify and extract. When appropriate, present information in lists, tables, or other structured formats.

Here is an example of less structured content:

“Common GEO measurement tools include Google Search Console for search performance data, Bing Webmaster Tools for Bing search data, GA4 for referral traffic and conversions, and prompt-tracking platforms such as Profound for monitoring brand visibility in AI-generated answers.”

And here is an example of structured content:

8. Ensure Information Is In Accessible HTML (Versus Images or JavaScript)

Text embedded in images may require additional processing to interpret, while content dependent on client-side JavaScript may not be available to every crawler or retrieval system.

If you have key information that’s only available inside images or loaded with JavaScript, consider having it be presented in the rendered HTML instead.

Here’s an example of text within an image:

9. Support Claims with Evidence

If you make a claim in your content, the AI assistant should easily understand:

  • What is the claim?
  • Who or what does the claim apply to?
  • What evidence supports the claim?

You should include supporting information for claims within your content, as well as link to external sources when available.

Here’s an example of a weak claim:

“Allowing AI crawlers to access your website can improve your visibility in AI-generated answers.”

And here’s an example of a supported claim:

“Allowing OAI-SearchBot to access your website can help your content appear in ChatGPT search. OpenAI states that publishers should not block OAI-SearchBot if they want their site content to be eligible for inclusion in ChatGPT summaries and snippets.”

10. Use Specificity in Your Language

We spoke about including related entities already; this tip is more about including supporting details to make your information more robust.

Include specific attributes like:

  • Dates
  • Percentages
  • Names
  • Locations
  • Product names
  • Measurements
  • Qualifications

Here’s an example of a less specific claim:

“AI search traffic increased significantly after we updated the content.”

And here’s an example of a more specific claim:

“Referral traffic from ChatGPT increased 38% between March and June 2026 after we updated 25 blog posts with clearer definitions, descriptive headings, and self-contained passages.” (Hypothetical example.)

11. Avoid Boilerplate

A key attribute of extractability is information density. The less filler content you include, the better.

In short, you want a high signal-to-noise ratio, where every word in your content serves a purpose with nothing extraneous.

Here’s an example of boilerplate heavy language:

“In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, businesses of all sizes are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to improve their online visibility and reach their target audiences. As artificial intelligence continues to transform the way people search for information online, GEO has become an increasingly important consideration for marketers who want to stay ahead of the curve.”

And here’s an example of higher information density:

“Generative engine optimization (GEO) focuses on improving a brand’s visibility in AI-generated answers, including mentions, citations, and recommendations from AI assistants.”

Remember, Extractability Doesn’t Mean Citability

Your content may be highly extractable, but an AI assistant still needs to determine that the passage is useful and relevant enough to include in an answer.

Focus on incorporating proprietary information that gives your content unique value and increases the odds an AI assistant will decide to choose it as part of an answer.

And remember, before your content can be chosen or extracted, it must be fetchable. That means technical fundamentals, like not blocking AI crawlers with robots.txt, HTTP status codes, server accessibility, rendering, crawlable internal links, and site speed, still matter.

Following the tips outlined in this guide will help make your content more extractable for AI assistants, which can increase the chances of your content being used as a source or citation in AI-generated answers, and of you ultimately being recommended in those answers.

If you only remember one tip from this guide, it should be to write in self-contained passages. That doesn’t mean artificially chunking your content (you never know how your content will be chunked by AI assistants, so don’t try to predict it). But it does mean ensuring that, if a section of your content was removed from the page, it could be understood in isolation.
