And we’re off …
🧑💻 Marketing word of the week: “Segmentation”
Segmentation is the practice of dividing a broad market or audience into smaller groups that share similar characteristics, needs, or behaviors.

Not every customer wants the same thing, so the idea behind segmentation is that marketing becomes more effective when you tailor the message, offer, or channel to a specific group instead of treating everyone alike.
Common types of segmentation include:
- Demographic: age, income, job title, education, household type
- Geographic: country, city, region, climate, local market
- Psychographic: values, interests, attitudes, lifestyle
- Behavioral: purchase history, usage, loyalty, browsing behavior, engagement
- Needs-based: grouping people by the problem they are trying to solve
You can think about segmentation when deciding which search intents, industries, personas, or use cases your content should address. Instead of writing one generic page for everyone, you might create content for different audience segments and the questions each segment is likely to ask.
While segmentation identifies the groups, targeting determines which groups you actually pursue.
🤖 AI word of the week: “Reranking”
Reranking is the process of taking an initial set of retrieved results and using a more sophisticated model to reorder them based on how relevant they are to the query.

An AI search system might first retrieve 100 potentially relevant documents using embeddings or keyword matching, for example, then a reranker evaluates those candidates more carefully and moves the most useful ones toward the top before the system generates its answer.
For SEO/GEO, reranking matters because retrieval alone doesn’t guarantee visibility. Your content may enter the candidate set, but a reranking model can still determine whether it becomes one of the sources actually used or surfaced.
✌️Introduction to week 146: “Reddit for good”
Lately, I’ve been a bit more involved in the r/AISEOforBeginners subreddit.
There are spammy posts in there where people use AI to generate what I think they hope will be a visible post in terms of AI citations, but there are also a lot of great questions.
My Reddit user name is Fair-Cancel-7111. It’s an automatically generated username I created years ago but never really used, until now.
Reddit is everything people say it is, and that includes a force for good, in some instances.
I encourage you to explore the platform, if you haven’t yet, and contribute where you can.
Thank you for supporting Hamsterdam and the cause of SEO/GEO learning. 🙏
Enjoy the vibes:
