How to Track Prompts for Different Geographic Locations (GEO Strategy)

Whether you run a local business or a global brand, you may need to track prompts across different geographic locations as part of your GEO strategy.
In this quick guide, I’ll explain the different ways you can structure and organize location-based prompt tracking.
And here’s a quick video to accompany this article:
Track by Country
Many prompt-tracking tools allow you to run prompts from an IP address associated with a selected country. This allows you to compare how AI responses may differ across geographic markets. Depending on the platform and your plan, you may have one location available or several.
To find the location associated with your prompt-tracking setup, visit your settings.

Prompt Wording and Location Tags
For more localized tracking, you can mention a specific town, city or region within the prompt itself.
Insert the location into the prompt, such as: “Recommend GEO consultants in New York City” or “Which GEO agencies are based in Manhattan, NY?“
Once you have created your location-specific prompts, you can assign tags to organize and filter them. The tags can reflect the geographic location represented by each prompt, such as “New York City” or “Manhattan.”

Different Language Prompts
You can also track prompts in different languages to understand how AI visibility changes across language-specific queries, and combine that with other tactics.
For example, you could track Spanish-language prompts mentioning Southern California and assign location and language tags to them. This would allow you to compare the brand’s visibility across English- and Spanish-language queries within the same market.
Keep in mind that translated prompts may not be exact equivalents. Whenever possible, use natural phrasing that reflects how people actually ask questions in each language.
Keep Your Location Tests Consistent
For the best results, you want to test changing one factor at a time.
| Prompt | Run location | Language | Location in wording | Tags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Find a GEO agency for an ecommerce brand | United States | English | None | US, English |
| Find a GEO agency in New York City | United States | English | New York City | NYC, English |
| Find a GEO agency in the UK | United Kingdom | English | United Kingdom | UK, English |
| Recomienda una agencia especializada en GEO en Nueva York. | United States | Spanish | New York City | NYC, Spanish |
This approach will produce more comparable results, leading to more reliable reporting and better-informed AI visibility decisions.
For example, comparing the second and third prompts above can help isolate the effect of the run location, while comparing the English- and Spanish-language prompts can reveal differences associated with language.
Takeaways
Geographic prompt tracking can involve several variables, including:
- Where the prompt is run.
- Which location is mentioned in the prompt’s wording.
- Which language is used in the prompt.
- How the prompt is tagged.
Treating those variables separately will make it easier to identify why visibility differs between markets.
