What Percentage of Search Traffic Does Perplexity Get? A Tales from the Query Post

Tales from the Query how much percentage of traffic does Perplexity get?

This article is part of a new series for my blog called “Tales from the Query,” where I look at a random query in GSC and write a blog post about it.

Today’s query is: “how much % of search traffic does perplexity get?”

I already have an article that ranks for this query, “How Does Perplexity Work?”:

Perplexity query in Google Search Console.

But I know for a fact it doesn’t answer that query directly.

So let’s get to it.

At first, this seems like an easy query to answer: just look at a recent study of search engine market share:

Source: StatCounter Global Stats – AI Chatbot Market Share

StatCounter says Perplexity is about 4.31% of the AI chatbot market share worldwide based on traffic referrals as of August 2026.

But that doesn’t include search engines like Google. So now we have to find another study.

Value Add VC says that “Perplexity has approximately 45 million monthly active users as of mid-2026, more than double the 22 million it had at the start of 2025,” so in terms of growth rate, “Perplexity wins” compared to ChatGPT and Google.

However, in overall search market share, Value Add VC says Perplexity is “<1% of total search queries” while Google is “~90.46% of search engine market.”

We should also note that these data sources are all measuring different things: less than 1% of search queries doesn’t tell us traffic referral numbers, for example. So we have to piece together a narrative, which is that Perplexity is a small but potentially growing source of AI referral traffic.

But what does that mean for your website’s traffic?

We also have to factor in that traffic varies by audience.

According to the AI Overview on Google, “Perplexity AI’s user base skews heavily toward young, highly educated, and high-earning knowledge workers. Demographically, over 50% of its users are between the ages of 18 and 34, with the 25–34 cohort forming the largest single segment.” (Sources: Omnibound.AI, Click-Vision, Empler.AI, and WeAreTenet.)

That suggests brands with that type of target audience are likely to see more referral traffic from Perplexity than brands with other audience types.

In my GA4 data over the last 30 days (Aug 16 – Sep 14), for example, Perplexity makes up 1.35% of total sessions and 4.98% of organic and AI assistant sessions.

So, if you’re trying to answer the question of “what percentage of search traffic does Perplexity get?” the answer is it depends.

If you’re looking at the published estimates for Perplexity, we could say StatCounter reports 4.31% of AI chatbot referrals for August 2026, while Value Add VC estimates less than 1% of total search queries.

But knowing how Perplexity’s audience skews younger and more professional, we should also look at each brand’s individual analytics data to find the percentage of website traffic attributed to Perplexity.
