The Connection Between Social Media and SEO/GEO Strategies in 2026 (A Follow-Up)

An artistic representation of social media being used in search results.

A couple of years ago, I wrote a longer-form blog post called “Is Social Media Content Ranking More In Google Search? And Why The Overlap of Social & SEO Matters.”

Consider this article a follow-up to that one, but with a greater emphasis on how organic social media contributes to AI visibility today.

From Reddit to YouTube to LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram, organic social content is being retrieved by ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, and other AI assistants as sources or citations that are used to influence mentions and recommendations. I see it in the prompts I track.

On top of that, in July 2026, Google rolled out tracking in Google Search Console for organic social media channels, further showcasing not only the role of organic social content for SERP visibility, but also the importance of having a holistic content ecosystem where your brand is uniformly represented — in other words, how your brand is talked about should be consistent across the web.

It’s all about entity clarity.

Practically speaking, entity clarity involves giving search engines and AI assistants consistent information about a brand, including what they do, which topics they are associated with, and which profiles officially belong to them.

The Hidden Gems Update

In November 2023, Google announced what became known as the Hidden Gems update or system: “One of the best ways to get information that works for your specific needs is to find someone with firsthand experience. We’re introducing a few updates to make it easier for people to find and share their insights with others on Search.”

Barry further described Hidden Gems in SER at that time: “This aims at finding these hidden gems within forums, blog posts, social media and other places. It is not explicitly classifying something as a ‘gem,’ but instead the idea is that this type of content can be perceived as especially helpful and in the past, might have been harder to appear in results.”

Why do I bring up the Hidden Gems update or system? Because I believe this was the impetus for us seeing more organic social media content in Google’s search results.

Of course, social media websites are just that: websites. They’ve been findable in search results for as long as search engines have indexed them.

But what I showed in my first article that I referenced in the introduction was the sheer variety of SERP features that include organic social media content.

In fact, just the other day, my wife showed me a “What People Are Saying” feature with an Instagram video for her search for “today’s weather.” (The UGC video had nothing to do with the weather, btw lol.)

The point is, we can’t talk about “rankings” or “visibility” on Google for a brand’s website alone and not also be discussing their organic social media. The two are intertwined as one goal: your brand’s holistic online presence.

AI Assistant Sources

But showing up in Google isn’t the extent of your social media channels’ influence on your organic visibility.

There’s also the role of social media as sources or citations for AI-generated answers.

It’s not hard to spot Reddit as a source, for example, even for the most general prompts:

Reddit as the first source in an AI Overview.
Reddit as the first source in an AI Overview answer.

Reddit is also a horse of a different color, arguably, compared to other organic social platforms. What I mean is, as a community platform, you don’t just go there and post to your heart’s content; it takes a strategy (if you’re a brand, that is). But never fear, I’ve written a separate guide on how to use Reddit as part of a GEO strategy.

YouTube and Instagram are also heavily retrieved by AI assistants as sources or citations for answers in my tracking.

But the surprising one for me is Instagram. I see Instagram videos retrieved far more often than I’d expect to. And looking at my prompt-tracking data, one account in particular is cleaning up:

Instagram URLs in Peec AI.

I would surmise that this is due, in part, to a content gap: most SEO/GEO professionals I follow aren’t posting content on Instagram (that I’m aware of).

That’s also an opportunity.

What to Do Next

It’s better to publish great content in one place than to spread yourself too thin. With that said, a brand can follow these tips:

  1. Choose social platforms where its audience already searches or discusses a topic.
  2. Keep brand descriptions, expertise, and core information consistent.
  3. Publish firsthand (experiential) content that provides examples, demonstrations, or opinions.
  4. Adapt content to each social platform instead of distributing identical posts everywhere (which I’m guilty of).
  5. Measure social URLs alongside website visibility in traditional and AI search.

Wrapping Up

Compared to my 2024 article, this follow-up was quite short, but that’s an evolution in my own writing: just like social media posts, I’ve learned to make my blog content be helpful but also snackable.

As we’ve seen, the prevalence of organic social media content in Google’s SERPs hasn’t much changed between 2024 and 2026, but something that has evolved is our use of AI assistants and their use of UGC as sources and citations.

Your content strategy for organic search and AI visibility can no longer just feature your website. It must also include your organic social channels, including Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn but also Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.

It’s better to post to one platform and be great at it than to post mediocre content everywhere, but the wider your presence, and the more consistent your information across those platforms, the greater your entity clarity and the higher your likelihood of achieving incremental organic visibility.
