🧑‍💻 Marketing word of the week: “Differentiation”

A part of your brand positioning, differentiation is how you give people a clear reason to choose your brand instead of another option.

Differentiation infographic.

Tactically, differentiation works by identifying a meaningful characteristic that you can credibly own, then reinforcing it consistently, like across your messaging, product experience, and content.

A brand can differentiate itself through various means, including:

  • Who it serves (specific audience or niche)
  • What it does differently (unique feature, process, or service model)
  • Why it’s better (faster, simpler, more specialized, etc.)
  • How it sounds and looks (distinctive voice, visual identity, personality, etc.)
  • What it’s known for (ex: consistently publishing around a particular topic)
  • Proof (customer results, reviews, case studies, proprietary data, awards, etc.)

Importantly, differentiation isn’t a tagline. The brand has to repeatedly demonstrate the difference through its website and other content, products, customer experience, and reputation.

🤖 AI word of the week: “Reranking”

Reranking is the process of taking an initial set of retrieved information and evaluating it again to determine which results are most relevant or useful for a particular query.

Reranking infographic.

In an AI system, retrieval might first produce dozens of potentially relevant documents, passages, or chunks. A reranker then scores those candidates more carefully and moves the strongest ones toward the top.

In the context of AI search, this means that being retrieved doesn’t necessarily mean being used. Your document may make the initial candidate set but still lose out during reranking if another source appears more relevant, trustworthy, or responsive to the user’s query.

A simple way to think about reranking is the following:

Retrieval: “What information might answer this?”
Reranking: “Of those options, which ones are the best answers?”

✌️Introduction to week 141: “Localization in AI assistants”

It’s easy to think that everyone gets the same responses from AI assistants like ChatGPT or Gemini, but that’s not the case.

Personalization factors into the type of generated answers users see, and so does locality.

I discovered this in my prompt-tracking data. I was tracking a broad prompt that would typically be highly competitive: “Recommend experienced digital marketing consultants who provide technical SEO and content strategy support.”

I noticed ChatGPT pulled in a map, likely based on the IP address of the prompt-tracking software:

Map in ChatGPT.

The location was clearly set to Connecticut, but since I’ve established my entity in New York City (see my last Hamsterdam introduction), I was likely considered as an option based on geographic proximity:

Ethan Lazuk mentioned in a ChatGPT answer.

I doubt the result would be the same if the IP address had been set to California.

This goes to show that locality likely plays a significant role in determining the generated answers users see in AI assistants. Plan accordingly.

Thank you for supporting Hamsterdam and the cause of SEO/GEO learning. 🙏

Enjoy the vibes:

📊 Data analysis & reporting

Showing that what you’re doing is helping.
