🧑‍💻 Marketing word of the week: “Salience”

Salience refers to how noticeable, memorable, or mentally accessible a brand is in a particular situation.

Salience infographic.

The best way to understand salience is to look at in context relative to related terms:

  • Awareness: Have people heard of you?
  • Salience: Does your brand come to mind in the right context?
  • Visibility: Can people and search systems find you?
  • Relevance: Do you fit the query or need?
  • Retrievability: Is there enough evidence for an AI system to surface you?

Why is salience relevant to SEO/GEO? Because AI search isn’t only about being present. It’s also about becoming a prominent enough association with a topic, category, problem, or need that your brand is likely to be recalled and retrieved.

🤖 AI word of the week: “Embedding”

An embedding is a numerical representation of meaning that lets an AI system compare how closely related words, concepts, documents, or entities are.

Embedding infographic.

A good way to understand embeddings is to look at the definition relative to related terms:

  • Keyword: The literal word being used.
  • Embedding: The meaning represented mathematically.
  • Similarity: How closely two embeddings relate.
  • Retrieval: Using those relationships to find useful information.
  • Entity: The person, brand, place, or concept being represented.

AI assistants don’t need two pages (or a page and a query) to use the exact same words to recognize that they discuss similar concepts. Embeddings help represent semantic relationships, which can influence retrieval and how information gets grouped or matched to a query.

✌️Introduction to week 143: “It’s Football Season!”

I’m a huge football fan. Last night, I watched Colorado at Georgia Tech. Coach Prime is back.

But the lesson I want to talk about is from the NFL and episode 5 of this year’s Hard Knocks. One of the players, a wide receiver, made the 53-man roster of the Seattle Seahawks and credited it in part to his father’s “delusional” belief in him.

Belief is a powerful force. As a small-business owner, I have to have a lot of self-belief to power through each day and be successful.

Regardless of the industry you’re in, embrace the power of belief. Let it motivate you. And if you can find someone else who believes in you, keep that person close.

We can find universal lessons in almost anything, but football especially.

Go Broncos.

Thank you for supporting Hamsterdam and the cause of SEO/GEO learning. 🙏

Enjoy the vibes:

Great Post! In regards to schema and AI platforms. No they do not use schema in the way we normally expect, but, being dumb as a fencepost AI does read it and treat it like text! So it is one method of adding a machine readable layer to your page.
