Hamsterdam Part 80

Opening notes, thoughts, and musings:

  • Welcome to another new week of Hamsterdam! 🐹
  • I appreciate you being here, and look forward to sharing the week’s news! 🙌
  • My Broncos have a big game in Buffalo today. Fingers crossed! 🏈

If you’re in a rush, hop down to the news portion. 📰

And we’re off …

🧑‍💻 Marketing word of the week: “Omnichannel”

Omnichannel marketing is a customer-centric approach that focuses on creating an integrated — and seamless — brand experience across all available channels and touchpoints.

Omnichannel marketing vs traditional and multichannel.
Source

Omnichannel marketing can encompass anyway your customer interacts with your brand online, be it website, social media, or email, as well as in store or through other means, like a mobile app or customer service phone call.

Integrated channels are key to omnichannel marketing, including data sharing to create a unified customer journey. This also involves consistent brand messaging for seamless (key word) transitions between channels.

🤖 AI word of the week: “One-shot learning”

One-shot learning is a machine learning approach designed to learn classifiers from a single training example. It is often used in object classification.

Instead of learning to classify from a large dataset, the model focuses on learning a similarity function. It compares new examples to the single example it has for each category. See below:

One shot learning example.
Source

Other approaches include zero-shot learning and few-shot learning.

In zero-shot learning, the model learns to recognize categories without seeing any examples but instead relying on descriptions or attributes of the categories.

In few-shot learning, the model learns from a small number of examples from each category, usually 2-10.

🎙️ Introduction to week 80: NotebookLM Podcast

A big hit last month was a talk by Mark Williams-Cook:

This was the reasons I went to #searchnorwich. An amazing talk on a real Google exploit and some amazing real findings, imho way bigger than the leak. And @markwilliamscook.com is an amzing presenter. #seowww.youtube.com/watch?v=_AQ9…

Arnout Hellemans (@hellemans.me) 2024-12-12T16:18:33.483Z

In that talk, he mentioned a diagram from an SEL article by Mario Fischer called “How Google Search ranking works.”

It’s a robust article that delves deep into a number of key topics around how Search works, like twiddlers and Navboost.

Like many, I’ve been playing with Google’s NotebookLM to digest longer-form content or complex topics.

The podcast I got from this particular article was well done, so I decided to share it here for you:

Thank you for supporting Hamsterdam and the cause of SEO & AI learning. 🙏

Enjoy the vibes:

Missed last week? Don’t worry, I got you! Read Part 78-79 to catch up.

🍟 SEO tips & tidbits

Actionable tips, cool tidbits, and other snackable findings and observations that can be teaching moments.

Okay, hear me out; the power of a brand isn't really something that’s new in 2025.Many within SEO have felt that brands have an unfair advantage in search results for years, and the usual response is that brands provide results that users want.I'm not going to wade into that argument.🧵 1/6

This. Use audience research at scale. It corrects for skewed results from surveys, lets you find whole new audiences, and frankly makes you look pretty dang clever. Don't take my word for it. Listen to @randfish.bsky.social sparktoro.com/blog/the-big…

When it doesn’t have an answer, an AI model can confidently spew back a response anyway. For Google, this could be a real problem. For the rest of us, it could actually be dangerous. Excellent read on AIO; http://www.technologyreview.com/2025/01/06/1…

✍️ Content marketing

From what is helpful content to user journeys and beyond.

When you're writing (a newsletter, blog post, etc.), WRITE TO ONE PERSON.❌ "Does anyone…"✅ "Do you…" David Ogilvy said it best:"When people read your copy, they are alone. Pretend you are writing each of them a letter…. One human being to another, second person singular."

Matt McGee (@seosavvyagent.com) 2025-01-10T17:46:28.922Z

58% of marketers said they are either not sure if their AI content performs better on Google… or that it performs the same as human generated content. If one of my clients told me this here's exactly how I would advise them (in the context of developing a brand strategy, which is what I do):🧵

Mordy Oberstein (@mordyoberstein.bsky.social) 2025-01-09T10:40:21.388Z

📍 Local SEO

From Google Business Profiles or reviews and more!

Watch out for this❗ I was reviewing the schema on a client’s site and noticed that they have local business schema on every page of the site.I mean, that’s fine if you only have one location, but they have 3, and the schema was set up globally in Rankmath for only their primary location. (1/5)
